FORT HOOD - Members of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1920 held an informational picket outside the main entrance to Fort Hood Wednesday.

The idea behind the event, held during the lunch hour, was to ask Congress to act and stop the furlough of about 800,000 Defense Department civilian employees, said Samuel Boles, executive vice president of the local chapter. A similar picket was held in March.

At Fort Hood, there are about 6,000 civilian employees that could be furloughed 14 days between June and October. This is down from the 22 days originally predicted by the department.

For more on the picket, read tomorrow's Killeen Daily Herald.
