A new railroad crossing is being installed at the intersection immediately south of Farm-to-Market 1113 and Spur Drive as part of the extension of Bradford Drive.

The crossing will replace the Olive Street crossing, which will close upon completion of the project.

Wesley Wright, Copperas Cove city engineer, said the high elevation of the crossing at the intersection of Olive Street and Farm-to-Market 1113 made necessary improvements impossible, so another crossing had to be built.

The Bradford Drive crossing is a cooperative effort between the city of Copperas Cove, the Texas Department of Transportation and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Co.

BNSF already has installed the crossing signal

arms and lights. The city is finishing the design of the Bradford Drive extension and acquiring the necessary right of way.

"The railroad was ready to do their part on the project. However, our design is not completed," Wright said. "I think ultimately they did us a favor and helped move the project along."

Wright said construction of the extension is expected to begin in early 2011. The entire project is expected to be finished in six to nine months.
