It began to look a lot like Christmas Sunday during the Harker Heights Ladies of Charity's 15th annual Holiday Bazaar at St. Paul Chong Hasang Catholic Church.
Ladies of Charity members flitted about in blue aprons, recalling Santa's helpers during the organization's biggest fundraiser of the year. The event began Saturday and ended Sunday morning at St. Paul's new Parish Center, adjacent to its Stillhouse Lake Road location.
Ladies baked, sewed and painted goods, as well as sought donations from local businesses, to sell at the bazaar. All proceeds will benefit local agencies that help the poor, Ladies president Sylvia Schnapp said.
"The community does not know how many needy families and children and elderly (there are here)," she said.
Schnapp declined to reveal how much the bazaar was expected to raise, but the event has grown each year over the last 15 years, she said.
This year, for the first time, a kids' craft table was set up to entertain children while their parents shopped for items such as homemade pies, hand-painted Christmas ornaments and knitted scarves.
Ladies of Charity is a 50-member organization that supports local families in need through material and financial donations to food banks, Families in Crisis Inc. and the Hope Pregnancy Center, among other area agencies.
Many members attend St. Paul's but not all.
Church member Dominga Anderson stole a quiet moment to shop before the 9 a.m. service ended Sunday, setting her sights on handmade stem ware coasters for about $2 each.
Someone had told her they were each colored differently to note whose glass was whose, she said.
"I said, 'You're right,'" she recalled, selecting eight. "I'll remember the one that's mine."
Beyond the uniqueness of the merchandise, shopping at the Holiday Bazaar ensured her money was going toward a good cause, Anderson said.
"It goes to a lot of organizations that help out in the Killeen area," she said.
The Ladies of Charity volunteers in the community throughout the year and run the Ladies of Charity Thrift Shop at 1005 S. Ann Blvd. in Killeen. Girls can participate in the Junior Ladies of Charity. For more information, call the shop at (254) 680-7970.
