GATESVILLE — Coryell County commissioners on Monday voted to lower the speed limit on a county road, appointed two people to the county’s economic development board and named one person to the hospital board.
The actions came after the commissioners devoted a half-hour to the first of two public hearings on the 2013 tax rate of 44.9 cents per $100 property valuation.
Although the tax rate is the same as last year, the hearings are required because some taxpayers will see an increase due to a rise in property valuation.
Commissioners voted to lower the speed limit on County Road 245 from 60 mph to 45 mph at the request of Commissioner Daren Moore.
The road northeast of Gatesville has seen an increase in traffic due to a detour around bridge repair work on County Road 929, Moore said. “The road is not made for all the traffic it is getting now,” Moore said.
Sheriff Johnny Burks recommended the 45 mph limit, and said the court should also consider lowering the speed limit on Winter Road, which also is getting detour traffic from the bridge project.
Commissioners unanimously approved Sam Golden and Mary Beth Harrell to fill vacancies on the Coryell County Economic Development Board and Mary Jane Zeigler to the Coryell Memorial Hospital board.
In preparation for the November general election, the commissioners approved a list of Republican and Democratic election judges and alternates for 15 polling places, as well as for early voting and the central count station.
Tax Assessor/Collector Justin Carothers, the county’s top election official, presented the list.
He said vacancies “will be filled as we can get them filled.”
The commissioners also approved the creation of three temporary branch polling places at the request of the Gatesville Independent School District, which will conduct a bond election and fill two seats on the school board on Nov. 5.
The temporary polls will be in the GISD administration building at 311 S. Lovers Lane, Gatesville Primary School at 308 S. 26th St. and Gatesville Elementary School at 2537 E. Main St.
