COPPERAS COVE — The city will open its transfer station for free residential and commercial trash drop-offs today with the help of Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful volunteers.

“It gives us the opportunity to partner with Solid Waste in giving back to the community,” said Silvia Rhoads, KCCB’s executive director and Copperas Cove’s recycling coordinator. “We feel it is important to give Copperas Cove residents the opportunity to clean up their property by getting rid of their junk, trash and brush at no charge.”

By offering this service, residents and business owners are allowed to remove large unwanted items from their homes and property, said Liz Sherman, vice president of Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful.

Contractors are not allowed to participate in the cleanup.

“It lets you get rid of items that you may no longer need on your property for free,” Sherman said.

The cleanup will help reduce litter and unsightly trash through the city, she said. Some people illegally dump items that can be disposed of or recycled at the cleanup such as tires, refrigerators, plastic bottles and plastic bags.

Working with the city allows KCCB to better accomplish the organization’s beautification goal, Rhoads said.

“Without the city’s partnership, we wouldn’t be able to hold these cleanups,” Sherman said.
