COPPERAS COVE — Debra Hull is dusting off her alarm clock.

After two years of retirement and waking up whenever she wanted to, Hull accepted a position as interim principal of Copperas Cove Independent School District’s Fairview/Jewell Elementary School.

“It’s kind of exciting because I’ve done a lot of traveling and I’m in between now, so it actually just kind of fit perfectly,” said Hull, who worked for the district for more than 30 years before retiring as director of student services in December 2011. “I’m excited to get back and see the kids and staff again.”

The district’s board of trustees unanimously voted to appoint Hull as interim principal during a special meeting Friday.

“Rather than disrupting all the other campuses in the district and moving people around, we went on the hunt and found someone who just has an outstanding track record for CCISD,” said Superintendent Joe Burns. “She very graciously, after a very persuasive conversation, agreed to come out of retirement for us.”

The position became vacant after the district’s director of special education, Stephanie Smith, stepped down.

The board voted last week to appoint Fairview/Jewell Principal Angela Kirkpatrick to that position.

Both Hull and Kirkpatrick will assume their new positions Feb. 10.

Although she’s sad to leave the elementary school she’s served since 2010, Kirkpatrick said she looks forward to working at the district level to build a team that serves every campus and student.

“We’re preparing them and helping them function and succeed,” Kirkpatrick said.

As interim principal, Hull will help get the school through the testing season this spring, Burns said.

Then, the board will begin its process of filling the position.

“I just plan to keep things running smoothly and assist them and support them and help in any way that I can,” Hull said. | 254-501-7549 | @SarahRafique
