COPPERAS COVE — The Copperas Cove Economic Development Corporation will open its new office Monday after selecting a contractor Friday for about $245,000 to renovate its current facility. The contractor still needs to be approved by the city.

During a called meeting Friday, corporation board members toured the temporary offices at 207 S. Third St. With several office supplies moved and employees setting up the facility, the corporation plans to be out of its 210 S. First St. offices by the start of next week.

“By Monday midday we will be fully operating,” said Polo Enriquez, the corporation’s executive director. “We will be moving out of boxes for a while.”

The corporation will be at the Third Street facility for about three months while a contractor renovates the Cove EDC’s First Street location to add larger meeting space. Once completed, it will serve both the corporation’s board and the Copperas Cove City Council.

By selecting its preferred contractor, Waco-based Built Wright Construction, Friday, Cove EDC is a step closer to getting renovations underway.

“We went out to bid and received two bids at the closing date,” Enriquez said. “We selected the lowest of the two prices.”

The council will review the corporation’s bid selection Sept. 17, when it will decide whether the contractor gets the job.

“Keep in mind all this is subject to the council’s approval,” Cove EDC Board Chairman Dan Yancey said Friday.

Since the future space will be shared, Cove EDC and the city agreed to split the cost, each paying $125,000.

Once renovations are complete, the Cove EDC retains the Third Street office space to use as a business incubator.

The center will serve as a site where small-, startup business owners can rent a space and have access to shared resources, such as copiers and professional services.

Cove EDC took over the city’s lease of the Third Street facility in August at a cost of $2,500 per month.
