FORT HOOD — The Copperas Cove Fire Department responded to a small brush fire that sent smoke sailing across U.S. Highway 190 between Constitution Drive and Robert Griffin III Boulevard on Friday.

“We assisted Fort Hood because it was on the reservation,” said Deputy Fire Chief Gary Young, noting the property was located outside the city limits.

An engine, a brush truck and a command vehicle were dispatched to the scene at 1:37 p.m.; a Fort Hood crew also worked to extinguish the blaze, Young said.

The small fire generated some heavy smoke near the area where Texas Department of Transportation employees are working on the State Highway 9 interchange with U.S. Highway 190.

Young said Fort Hood will investigate the fire.

Cove firefighters were on the scene for about two hours, but the blaze was mostly extinguished about 2:30 p.m.
