Copperas Cove school board members concluded interviews Wednesday with five finalists for the district superintendent position.

"The interviews are going well. There's a lot of really good energy," said Joan Manning, the board's president, about the two days of interviews. "We hope to have a finalist selected by the end of the month."

The candidates were whittled down from a pool of 43 applicants that Mike Smith, CEO of Education Solutions and Services, presented to board members in early April. At the time, Smith said the consulting firm would show the board all the applicants but tagged about 10 of them as highly compatible.

Manning said she was happy with the quality of the candidate pool. "There were lots of really good ones," she said. "We were able to narrow it down, and there was a general consensus about who the top contenders were."

Among the initial applicants, 20 were current superintendents and a majority of them were within Texas. Manning declined to comment on how many of the five interviewed candidates were within the Copperas Cove district.

Board members announced earlier that they want to hire a replacement for retiring Superintendent Rose Cameron before she leaves in late June, and their timeline calls for making a selection at a special meeting the week of May 14.

Texas law allows school boards to keep the identities of superintendent applicants secret, but they must release the names of a finalist or finalists 21 days before voting to hire. The Copperas Cove school board expects to announce its finalist on April 23.
