COPPERAS COVE — The Copperas Cove Independent School District will seek about 27 fewer classroom size waivers this year compared to last.
“We don’t like (class sizes) big,” said Cove ISD superintendent Joseph Burns. “We like those classes to be small.”
District staff Monday told the school board of trustees it wants waivers for three classrooms, which are bigger than the state recommendation.
The state recommends 22 students per classroom in prekindergarten through fourth grade. Cove ISD has managed to stay at or below the number except for in the third grade, Burns said. There are two classrooms at Hettie Halstead and one at House Creek that exceed the recommended number of students.
Each of those classrooms currently has 23 students, a number that may decline before waivers are required to be submitted to the state. If the district reaches 30 days with students in excess of the recommended classroom size, the district must submit a waiver.
Last year, the district requested 30 waivers from the state, said Cindy Hutcherson, district executive director of academic services. The year before that, there were about 70 waivers.
Enrollment for the district in late August was 8,120, which is slightly lower than last year.
Burns and Hutcherson attributed the shrinking number of waivers to planning.
“We have very strategic placing with the transfer students,” Hutcherson said. There are about 16 students in most elementary school classrooms, Burns said.
The school board will meet tonight at 6:30. Several other issues are on the agenda, including:
The 2013-2014 Student Health Advisory Committee’s Roster of Parent Members.
Notice of election for Nov. 5.
Candidate appointments to the Coryell Central Appraisal District board of directors.
The contract for the deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
A resolution declaring Oct. 9 as Texas Education Human Resources Day.
A proclamation declaring October as Principals Month.
