COPPERAS COVE — The Copperas Cove High School Junior ROTC held a flag-burning ceremony Monday for dozens of unserviceable U.S. flags.

The U.S. Flag Code states that when “the flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

The cadets said more than 200 flags were collected for the ceremony. One flag was reserved for the ceremony. The other flags were cut into strips and placed in a barrel.

During the ceremony, cadets cut the blue background with stars from the reserved flag and then cut apart the red and white stripes.

The pieces were placed in the barrel and the fire lit.

Cadets offered a final salute as taps played.
