COPPERAS COVE — Several city offices will close Thursday so administrators can move to a building complex at 914 S. Main St.
“Thursday is our last day in this building,” City Manager Andrea Gardner said, about the facility at 207 S. Third St., which the city has leased since September.
The Third Street office space was leased by the city with a property at 221 W. Avenue D for about $4,500 per month. The city purchased the Main Street location in January for about $663,000.
The city’s finance department will remain at the Avenue D space until a final tenant moves out of the office building in June 2014. The city secretary’s office, which shares the building with the finance offices, also will move at a later date.
By Friday, the Main Street location will open to the public, with city administration, budget, human resources and information technology departments located in the facility.
Building development and code enforcement departments will move during the week but are anticipated to open Monday. The move will put building development mostly out of operation on Friday.
“If people want permits, we encourage them to do it Thursday or do it online,” Gardner said. The department’s computers will be down Friday, and staff members will not be able to issue any type of permits to include garage sale permits.
Gardner said the move isn’t costing anything but employee hours and fuel, as everything is being handled in-house and each department is coordinating its own move.
This move will be the second in nine months for most departments, which should make the process easier, Gardner said.
To prevent confusion, the city will put signs on the Third Street office building door with the new location noted.
