COPPERAS COVE — Police arrested a man suspected of carrying drugs and possessing a firearm illegally after they pulled over his vehicle because he didn’t have a license.
Justice of the Peace John Guinn on Thursday arraigned Sherman Shamane Freeman Jr. on charges of possession of a controlled substance, less than 1 gram, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Guinn set his bond at $35,000 on the charges.
According to the arrest affidavit, police noticed Freeman getting into his vehicle in the 2300 block of East U.S. Highway 190 and knew his driver’s license was expired because of a previous incident.
Officers followed and pulled over the vehicle after it left the roadway, the affidavit stated.
While searching Freeman, they discovered a magnetic key box containing trace amounts of a substance that tested positive for cocaine, the affidavit stated. Officers found a firearm in the vehicle.
Freeman has a previous conviction and shouldn’t have a firearm, the affidavit stated.
In an unrelated incident, Guinn arraigned James Lewis Spangler on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, less than 1 gram. Guinn set his bond at $8,000.
Police discovered a glass pipe containing methamphetamine on Spangler after he was arrested on a family violence charge.
