COPPERAS COVE — A new stoplight at the intersection of the future Robert Griffin III Boulevard and U.S. Highway 190 will start regulating Five Hills traffic in the coming week.
“The light is scheduled to go live Thursday of next week,” said Ken Roberts, a Texas Department of Transportation spokesman. “That could, however, be accelerated.”
Roberts said power was connected to the traffic light at the intersection Wednesday, and the contractor for the construction project, San Diego-based Ledcor, was expected to turn the light to a flashing mode Thursday or today.
Flashing the light in a standby setting alerts drivers to the installation of the new signal.
Once the signal is live, westbound drivers will be able to turn left into Five Hills onto Robert Griffin III Boulevard, and drivers exiting the shopping center will have a controlled intersection from which to leave.
A representative from Endeavor Real Estate, Daniel Campbell, said while not yet open, Robert Griffin III Boulevard is ready for traffic from U.S. 190 to MLK Boulevard. The roadway is a four-lane street with a turn lane into the H-E-B parking lot.
Endeavor Real Estate is developing the Five Hills shopping center site.
Motorists can expect to use both the light and the roadway before H-E-B Plus opens Feb. 1, Campbell said.
“We believe that the light will be fully operational at the end of next week,” he said.
Drivers not coming from U.S. 190 also can access the shopping center from MLK Boulevard, Campbell said. It is complete as well.
Construction on Robert Griffin III is under way for the remaining portion for development, Campbell said. Lanes from MLK to Old Copperas Cove Road should be finished within 60 days.
The city, Endeavor Real Estate and the Cove Economic Development Corporation are planning a dedication ceremony for the roadway at a later date, said Polo Enriquez, the corporation’s executive director. But “there is no date yet.”
The city is attempting to schedule a time for the road’s namesake — current Washington Redskins quarterback, Baylor University Heisman Trophy winner and former Copperas Cove Bulldawg standout — to participate in the road dedication, Campbell said.
