GATESVILLE — A 52nd District Court jury sentenced a Copperas Cove woman to 10 years in prison after she attacked an officer and was shot three times.

Amanda Lynn Jackel, 23, of Copperas Cove, will spend up to five years in a state prison before she can apply for parole.

A jury found her guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in an attack on a public servant and then sentenced her Thursday to 10 years in prison.

On Feb. 14, Copperas Cove police responded to a suicide incident at City Park where Jackel was threatening to kill herself.

“If you don’t shoot me, I am going to kill you,” Jackel said before coming out of a trailer with a knife. “I am going to die tonight.”

Officer shot woman

According to the arrest affidavit, Jackel kept approaching the officer and then the officer shot her. She fell and was taken into custody.

“She came very close to striking him with a knife,” said District Attorney Dusty Boyd, who called the weapon “pretty imposing looking.”

The knife had a 7-inch double-sided blade. The officer shot her three times, striking her in the torso each time, according to court records.

Jury praised

While the penalty for the charge ranges anywhere from five years to life, Boyd’s office did not request the maximum punishment and commended the jury for coming to its decision on time.

“We didn’t recommend a high-range punishment,” Boyd said. “We had a young defendant and there was a lot of other dynamics that played into the case such as a history with mental health issues.”

Ten years will not only punish Jackel for the crime but it will give her a chance to rehabilitate herself while in the state institution, Boyd said. “Hopefully she will use this time productively ... so she can get out and have a good life.”
