Four adults and four children huddled together against the cold, watching silently as colorful balloons floated into a slate-gray sky above Killeen.

That was the scene at Long Branch Park on Friday afternoon, as friends and family gathered to remember Antonio Terrell Griffin, a 31-year-old Killeen barber and Army veteran, whose 2012 murder remains unsolved. Griffin’s widow, Tomarra Griffin, and his four children came to the park to release balloons on the anniversary of his death.

“It helps my son,” Tomarra Griffin said. “He was really close to his father.”

Griffin was killed Dec. 6, 2012, when he was shot multiple times inside a duplex home in the 1100 block of Royal Crest Drive in west Killeen. One year later, no arrests have been made.

“There’s no closure,” said Tomarra Griffin. “We don’t know who did this.”

Darcy Corcoran, a close friend of the Griffins, agreed.

“People still want answers,” Corcoran said. “He didn’t deserve this.”

Sgt. Candice Reyes, lead sergeant for the Killeen Police Department’s major crime section, said so-called “cold cases” like Antonio Griffin’s occur when investigators exhaust all the leads in a case. While investigators may not have any leads to follow up on, the cases can be reactivated if new information comes to light, Reyes said.

“All unsolved homicides are considered open investigations,” Reyes said.

Reyes did not say how many unsolved cases the department has, but noted the KPD Facebook page, which asks the public for information on unsolved cases, lists nearly 30. The oldest unsolved homicide dates back to 1973, Reyes said.

Anyone with information on Antonio Griffin’s death, or any unsolved case, can call Bell County Crime Stoppers at 254-526-8477, go to www.bellcountycrimestoppers.com, or text BELLCO along with the tip to 274367.
