TEMPLE — A 49-year-old woman teaching with the Belton Independent School District allegedly failed to report information that a 15-year-old Belton student may have been the victim of abuse, neglect or assault.

The special education teacher at South Belton Middle School surrendered Thursday at the Bell County Sheriff’s Department and was charged with failure to report child abuse or neglect. She was released Thursday after posting a $5,000 bond.

The teacher was placed on administrative leave after the district learned about the investigation March 21, district spokesman Kyle DeBeer said Thursday.

Deputies were told the teacher had knowledge that a student may have been a victim of abuse, neglect or sexual assault by a 25-year-old Belton man.

The teacher had an obligation under state law to report any knowledge she had of possible abuse, neglect or assault. She did not report it, according to the Special Crimes Unit investigators.
