COPPERAS COVE — Police and members of the Fort Hood bomb squad found “suspicious items” inside a house in the 400 block of Seventh Street Tuesday, resulting in one arrest.

Jason Alan Garthwaite Sr. was charged Wednesday with abandoning or endangering a child and having a prohibited weapon, according to a news release from the Copperas Cove Police Department.

Garthwaite’s bond was set at $150,000, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating, according to CCPD.

“Additional federal charges are pending,” the release stated.

Several residents near the home were evacuated and about two blocks of Meggs and Seventh Street were blocked off during the search. Residents in the area said police had been at the home since about 5 p.m. Tuesday. The location was deemed safe and secure with all hazards removed about 2 a.m. Wednesday, police said. Garthwaite is being held at the Coryell County Jail, police said.
