GATESVILLE — The Coryell County Democratic Party executive committee Thursday voted not to support the countywide-precinct proposal because it would eliminate the option of paper ballots.

The county commissioners’ court will consider whether to apply to the secretary of state to switch to countywide voting, which would allow any qualified county voter to vote at any county polling place on Election Day.

Tax Assessor/Collector Justin Carothers, the top election official in the county, has asked the commissioners to approve the application.

Gene Whittle, chairman of the county Democratic Party, notified County Judge John Firth and Carothers of the decision by email.

“Though we recognize several advantages in the countywide plan,” Whittle’s email stated, “polling among (Democratic) voters and party members reflects an overwhelming preference for the availability of paper ballots.”

The Coryell County Republican Party is on record as supporting the countywide-precinct proposal.
