COPPERAS COVE — A Cove man was arrested Wednesday and is accused of choking his girlfriend.
Demarcus Rashad Beckham was charged with assault of a family member, impeding breathing and circulation — a third-degree felony. He was arraigned by Coryell County Justice of the Peace John Guinn on Thursday. His bail was set at $10,000.
According to the arrest affidavit, a police officer was dispatched to the 1000 block of North Drive in Copperas Cove on a stolen vehicle complaint. However, the officer reported it as domestic violence because the victim said her boyfriend choked her after they had an argument.
The affidavit stated the victim was holding her infant child when Beckham allegedly pushed her onto the couch and began strangling her. She put the child down and got up, but accidentally grabbed the suspect’s gold chain. He choked her again until she hit a wall and fell. The victim fled to the bedroom and grabbed the car keys, but the suspect choked her and she fell again, according to the affidavit. Beckham allegedly straddled her and choked her until she couldn’t breathe.
