A Copperas Cove man is facing a felony charge after he threatened his girlfriend with an axe Monday, according to police.

Richard Ellsworth Spencer Jr. was arraigned Tuesday by Justice of the Peace John Guinn on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

According to an arrest affidavit, the incident occurred at a home in the 400 block of Lutheran Church Road, when Spencer woke up his girlfriend and told her to help look for his wallet.

He pulled everything off his dresser, then said he would break her property and “light the place on fire,” the woman told police.

Spencer then left the bedroom and returned with an ax.

According to the woman, Spencer said he would “chop off her head” if she called the police.

“(Spencer) told (the woman) that she wouldn’t feel anything when he chopped off her head because the ax was so sharp,” the affidavit stated.

According the an arrest affidavit, the woman said she also witnessed Spencer grab a gas can and begin pouring gasoline on the living room floor. He also poured some of the gas on her legs and feet, the affidavit stated.

Guinn set Spencer’s bail at $50,000.
