Dog attack leaves one child dead

Killeen police officers and an animal control officer take into custody a dog that attacked three people on Pennington Avenue in Killeen on March 1, 2014. A 2-year-old boy died of his wounds and an 8-year-old girl was hospitalized.

One child is dead and another is injured after they were attacked by a large dog in a Killeen neighborhood Saturday afternoon.

Killeen police said the attack occurred just before 5 p.m. near the intersection of Pennington and Mildred avenues, in a neighborhood on the eastern side of Iduma Elementary School.

An 18-year-old man, an 8-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy were walking home from the Iduma playground when the dog, described as a large bull mastiff, ran out of the garage of a home.

The dog first attacked the 8-year-old and had to be pried off her, police said. Then the dog grabbed and dragged the 2-year-old, police said. An unknown person fired a weapon at “some point” during the attack, scaring the dog, which ran back to the garage.

Both children were transported to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, where the 2-year-old boy was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke. An autopsy was ordered at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

The 8-year-old girl was in stable condition, KPD spokeswoman Carroll Smith said Saturday evening. Their names were withheld by police.

Killeen Animal Control took the dog into custody shortly after the attack. Smith said the incident was under investigation, and could not say whether the dog’s owner was cited.

Saturday’s dog attack was the third this year in Central Texas. A 2-year-old Temple girl died Feb. 17 after being mauled by a dog. Less than a week before that fatal attack, a 6-year-old Killeen girl was sent to McLane Children’s Hospital Scott & White in Temple after she was attacked by a dog, which a Killeen police officer shot and killed.
