A Fort Hood soldier is facing federal criminal charges after investigators said he stole explosives and tried to sell them online.

Spc. Tyler Glen Patrick, 23, was charged with possession and transportation of stolen explosive material, according to an announcement Thursday by U.S. Attorney Robert Pitman and FBI Special Agent in Charge Armando Fernandez.

According to the criminal complaint, Patrick attempted to sell a one-and-a-quarter-pound block of C-4 explosive, which he stole following a field exercise at Fort Hood.

Patrick was arrested by federal authorities Tuesday in Copperas Cove. He could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

According to Fort Hood officials, Patrick was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.

Patrick is the second Fort Hood soldier living in Copperas Cove to be arrested on charges involving explosives in the past three months.

Spc. Jason Alan Garthwaite Sr. was investigated by Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives after a bag containing pipe bombs and related materials was discovered at his residence in the 400 block of South Seventh Street, according to police.

Garthwaite, an infantryman, is charged with possession of an unregistered destructive device.

He pleaded not guilty Oct. 15 and is awaiting trial in early February, according to court records.

Like Patrick, Garthwaite also is assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s 3rd Brigade, but he is in a different battalion.

Officials have not said whether the two cases are related.
