BELTON — A 17-year-old Killeen High School student was indicted on a felony charge this week, after police said he brought a weapon and ammunition on campus.
A Bell County grand jury indicted Jonathon Allen Hampton, of Killeen, on a charge of possession of a prohibited weapon.
Hampton was arrested Jan. 30 after another student reported seeing him pick up a gray backpack, reach into it and place his hand around the handle of a gun, according to an arrest affidavit.
Police initially searched one of Hampton’s backpacks, and found only video games. They found a second backpack in his locker, the affidavit stated.
A search of the backpack in Hampton’s locker revealed a .22-caliber pistol, a magazine for the weapon, .22-caliber bullets and a ski mask, the affidavit stated.
Under Texas statute, the charge is a third-degree felony, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
