BELTON — Charges will move forward against a Nolanville man after police said a heated argument led to an attempt to burn down his home.

A Bell County grand jury on Wednesday afternoon indicted Errol George Sharpe Jr., 35, on a felony charge of arson.

According to an arrest affidavit, Bell County firefighters were called to a fire at a home in the 100 block of Moss Road in Nolanville at 8:37 a.m. July 29. They found a fire in the home’s living room and extinguished it.

A neighbor who called to report the fire later told investigators he saw Sharpe walking away from the house. The neighbor told police that when he told Sharpe the home was on fire, Sharpe threw his arms in the air, said a gas can exploded and walked away, according to an affidavit.

Investigators later spoke with Sharpe’s mother, who told them she and her son had an argument that morning. She said she left the home shortly before the fire was reported.

Bell County Fire Marshal Steve Casey said in an affidavit that he found a gas can near the back door, and that he believed the fire was intentionally set.

Sharpe was in custody in Bell County Jail as of Wednesday afternoon. His bail is set at $100,000.
