BELTON — A Bell County grand jury Wednesday upgraded charges against a 44-year-old Killeen man accused of assaulting a disabled woman.

Willie Lee Ockletree could now face life in prison if convicted of a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a charge the grand jury tacked on Wednesday to a count of injury to a disabled person.

Prior to his indictment, the most severe punishment Ockletree could have faced was 10 years in prison. Because of the new charge and three previous convictions in Bell County for home burglaries, both charges were further upgraded, First Assistant District Attorney Murff Bledsoe said.

Ockletree has remained in custody since his arrest March 12 with bail set at $50,000.

Police arrested Ockletree after responding to a 911 call in which the caller hung up before speaking to an operator, according to an arrest affidavit.

The number traced to a home in the 700 block of Houston Street in Killeen. When an officer approached the home, he could hear a man later identified as Ockletree and a female arguing.

The officer knocked on the door, and Ockletree answered. A female was seen sitting on a bed next to a walker. She told police Ockletree had held her face down on the bed with a pillow and threatened to kill her with a knife. She had a swollen and cut lip and complained of pain to her lip, neck and hand, the affidavit stated.

The woman told police she requires a walker to get around. Ockletree told police he was aware of the woman’s disability.

The grand jury also returned indictments against the following:
