A 19-year-old Harker Heights man was arrested Thursday in connection to a fatal shooting Tuesday in the 400 block of North Amy Lane.
Heights police and the Bell County Organized Crime unit arrested Larry Leshawn Thomas Jr. as a suspect in the murder of 28-year-old Jose Antonio Hernandez, of Harker Heights.
Thomas was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke and assigned a $1 million bond.
He is currently being held in the Bell County Jail.
Heights police received a call of shots fired in the 400 block of North Amy Lane at 8:36 p.m. Tuesday. When officers arrived they found an unconscious man with a gunshot wound lying on the ground near the driver-side door of a vehicle that had been parked on the side of the road.
According to the arrest affidavit issued for Thomas, the incident began in the parking lot of the Dollar General on Veterans Memorial Boulevard. A witness told police that Hernandez, driving a Hummer, had a confrontation with the driver of a Lincoln Navigator. The witness identified the Navigator’s driver as Thomas.
When Hernandez and the witness pursued the Navigator from the parking lot, the witness said Thomas fired two shots at the Hummer. The witness called 9-1-1 to report the situation.
Hernandez continued the pursuit, and Thomas allegedly fired more shots at the Hummer, with one of the rounds striking Hernandez in the face.
Hernandez was rushed to Scott & White Medical Center in Temple, where he was pronounced dead.
Heights police continue to investigate the incident.
