A high-speed chase through Bell County that reached speeds up to 100 mph ended Thursday afternoon on Fort Hood property near Gatesville.

The chase began in the Killeen-Harker Heights area when members of the Bell County Organized Crime Task Force were attempting to arrest a male suspect on outstanding felony warrants in Bell and Travis counties, according to a statement from the Bell County Sheriff’s Department.

The suspect fled police in a 1991 Ford Thunderbird, starting a pursuit with multiple law enforcement agencies through Killeen, Harker Heights, Belton and Temple. The pursuit eventually turned west on State Highway 36, and ended on East Range Road about 1:45 p.m., according to the sheriff’s department.

The chase came to an end when a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper opened fire on the vehicle, according to Harpin Myers, a senior trooper with DPS.

“The vehicle was driving very dangerously,” Myers said. “The trooper saw the suspect reach for something inside the car, and he shot out the two rear tires with his weapon.”

The suspect, described as a 53-year-old male, was transported to Metroplex Hospital in Killeen with a shoulder injury.

Myers said officers found drugs and three loaded handguns in the vehicle.

Myers said in addition to the Bell County Sheriff’s Office and DPS, other agencies involved in Thursday’s chase included the Killeen, Harker Heights, Nolanville and Temple police departments as well as Texas Parks and Wildlife, Bell County constables and the Coryell County Sheriff’s Department.

None of the agencies involved in the chase have jurisdiction on federal property.
