A traffic stop for a broken headlight led to the discovery of more than 22 pounds of cocaine Friday night, Bruceville-Eddy police Chief Bill McLean said.

Saul Herrera, 19, of San Antonio, was arrested and remained in McLennan County Jail on Monday.

Herrera was arraigned Monday morning on a charge of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. He is being held for federal marshals, McLean said.

Officers stopped Herrera’s pickup truck about 7:30 p.m. Friday at mile marker 318 on northbound Interstate 35. Herrera gave officers consent to search the vehicle, after which officers found reason to believe there might be hidden drugs or other items in the vehicle, McLean said.

A search uncovered a hidden compartment in the cab of the truck with drugs that field tested positive for cocaine. The estimated street value of the cocaine is more than $300,000, McLean said.
