TEMPLE — Interstate 35 was closed for hours overnight after a homicide suspect wanted statewide fatally shot himself during a police pursuit that ended in Temple.

The chase ended late Monday evening around mile marker 300 near a shopping center at I-35 and Loop 363.

Authorities said the Texas Department of Safety, the Bell County Sheriff's Department and Belton police officers were involved in the pursuit on northbound I-35 that started in Salado shortly after 9 p.m.

The chase ended near a construction zone, when the man shot himself in the head while in his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Bell County Justice of the Peace David Barfield.

The man's identity was not immediately released.

I-35 remained closed for hours as investigators gathered evidence.

The Texas Department of Transportation said alternative routes such as Loop 363, which goes around most Temple construction, are suggested.
