BELTON — A Bell County jury began deliberations this morning in the murder trial of 28-year-old Cliffton Sivad Montague.
The jury went into deliberations after hearing closing arguments from Bell County prosecutors and attorneys from Monatgue's defense team.
Montague is accused of shooting and killing Laterrance Deshawn Newsome inside an apartment in the 3200 block of Hereford Lane in Killeen on Oct. 11, 2012.
During the four days of testimony, prosecutors called numerous witnesses, including three women who claimed that Montague admitted to shooting someone after the murder.
"People heard it, and (Montague) talked about it over and over again," said prosecutor Anne Jackson, an assistant district attorney in Bell County.
Montague's defense team called much of the witness testimony into question, noting that two of those women changed their stories since the shooting, and admitted lying to police in parts of their original statements.
"They have not produced a single witness that's credible or believable," said Michael Magana, one of Montague's defense attorneys.
The jury began deliberations at 9:47 a.m.
