A Killeen man is on trial in Travis County in connection with a 2013 shooting death in Austin.

Derrick Leroy Kuykendall, 23, faces a first-degree murder charge in the trial that began Tuesday. Bennie Heslip, 23, of Pflugerville, was shot in the chest March 31, according to the Austin Police Department.

The shooting occurred about 3:15 a.m. in a parking lot at the intersection of Trinity Street and East 11th Street in downtown Austin during an argument between friends of Heslip and a female traveling with Kuykendall.

Witnesses said Kuykendall and Heslip approached each other, and two shots were fired. A Belton woman later told police Kuykendall confessed to the shooting during the drive back to Belton, the affidavit said.

Kuykendall is in Travis County Jail on $350,000 bond.
