Killeen police are asking for the public’s help finding a driver who struck and killed a female pedestrian and fled the scene.

The fatal hit and run occurred in the 2200 block of Stan Schlueter Loop sometime before 1:44 a.m. Thursday. Police were called to the scene after a motorist reported seeing a body in the roadway.

The woman was identified as 54-year-old Janice Marie Zeigler. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced Zeigler dead at 2:15 a.m. Thursday and ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

Police believe Zeigler was walking in the westbound lanes of Stan Schlueter Loop when she was struck.

Officers believe Zeigler was hit by a 2002 to 2005 Dodge Ram 1500, possibly blue in color. The collision may have damaged the right front of the truck.

Traffic Unit investigators are asking anyone with information about the hit and run to call Crime Stoppers at (254) 526-8477, go to www.bellcountycrimestoppers.com or text BELLCO and the tip to 274637.

All tips are anonymous and can be made confidentially.

A tipster who leads police to the person responsible for the crash may be eligible for a $1,000 reward.
