BELTON — A 35-year-old former Killeen resident was found guilty Tuesday of raping a young girl in 2003.
A jury found Angel Luis Martinez Jr., of Puerto Rico, guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years old, a first-degree felony. The deliberations took just under two hours.
Martinez was convicted of sexually assaulting his female victim, who was 7 at the time, in Killeen. During the trial, jurors heard from the victim — now 17 — who said Martinez placed a pillow over her head as he sexually assaulted her in her bed.
The victim did not report the incident until April 2012.
“Kids make delayed outcries. This is common,” Bell County Assistant District Attorney Shelley Strimple told jurors in her closing arguments. “For (the victim), it built up and built up until she couldn’t handle it anymore.”
Jurors also heard testimony from the victim’s mother, as well as medical professionals and the Killeen police detective in charge of the investigation during the two-day trial.
Martinez did not testify.
The sentencing phase of the trial is scheduled to take place today. Martinez’s punishment, which could range from probation to life in prison, will be determined by the same jury that convicted him.
