The Killeen Police Department recognized eight officers for their actions in a July 2013 shootout that wounded one officer and left another dead.

Killeen Police Chief Dennis Baldwin presented the awards Thursday.

Former KPD officer Christopher Ache and Officer Odis Denton received the Medal of Valor and Officer Juan Obregon — who was wounded in the shootout — was awarded the Police Purple Heart and the Meritorious Conduct Award.

KPD Sgt. Jonathan Rinehart, officers Brandon Smith, Joseph Delongchamps, former officer Lorraine McAtee and tactical paramedic Michael Neujahr also received Meritorious Conduct awards, according to a statement released by the department Friday.

All eight individuals were present when police exchanged gunfire with a Fort Hood soldier at a Killeen apartment complex. They were called to the scene on a report that the soldier, armed with an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle, was threatening residents at a swimming pool. Obregon was wounded and officer Robert “Bobby” Hornsby was shot and killed. The soldier also was killed.

“As the situation unfolded, these officers immediately took action demonstrating courage, risk and danger to his/her personal safety,” according to a statement from the department.

The department has not released the full results of the investigation in the shooting.
