An 18-year-old man was arrested after police said he tried to flee from them Monday night.

Killeen police attempted to pull over Matthew Scott Helton at 10:25 p.m. when they observed his vehicle run a stop sign at the intersection of Bundrant Drive and Tucker Street.

According to an arrest affidavit, Helton fled from police, reaching speeds up to 75 mph, running multiple stop signs.

Helton eventually stopped the car in the 2400 block of Henry Drive.

Police said they found a backpack and plastic bag containing a “green leafy substance” in the vehicle. Helton was arraigned on a charge of evading arrest in a motor vehicle, a state jail felony, by Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin on Wednesday. Helton’s bail was set at $20,000.
