AUSTIN — A Killeen man faces 15 years in prison after he was found guilty in the shooting death of a 23-year-old Pflugerville man.
Derrick Leroy Kuykendall, 23, was sentenced late Friday after being found guilty of manslaughter in connection with the October death of Bennie Heslip.
Heslip was killed in a parking lot at the intersection of Trinity Street and East 11th Street in downtown Austin in the early hours of Oct. 31. Witnesses said they saw Heslip and a female traveling with Kuykendall get into an altercation. Kuykendall and Heslip then approached each other, and two shots were fired.
A Belton woman later told police Kuykendall confessed to the shooting during the drive back to Belton, the affidavit said.
Speaking Tuesday, officials from the Travis County District attorney’s office said Kuykendall could face additional charges out of Bell County for violating parole and tampering with evidence related to the case.
The tampering with evidence charges stems from Kuykendall’s own admission that he threw the gun used during the shooting into Belton Lake, according to the Travis County District Attorney’s Office.
