A local man shot Friday during a confrontation with police remained in critical condition Monday at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Killeen Police Department officials said.

The man, whose identity was not released, was shot after police responded to a report of a suicidal man in the 4500 block of Golden Gate Drive at 11:38 a.m. Friday. When an officer attempted to speak with him, the man charged toward the officer wielding two knives, police said.

The officer was forced to discharge his weapon, shooting the man. He was immediately transported to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood after the shooting, then transferred to Scott & White.

A close friend of the man told the Herald on Friday that he was a veteran who was struggling with “grief and depression” from not being able to find steady employment.

The officer was placed on administrative leave, per KPD protocol, and his name was not released. The incident is under investigation by the department’s internal affairs division, and likely will be presented to a Bell County grand jury upon completion.
