Police said a Killeen man evaded arrest Monday after officers chased him down two flights of stairs.

Jalen Wesley Johnson, 20, was arraigned Tuesday on one count of evading arrest, a misdemeanor.

Killeen police responded to a call about an armed person in the 700 block of Santa Rosa Drive at 10:54 p.m. Monday when officers noticed a small orange bag they believed contained an illegal drug on the sidewalk next to Johnson’s right pocket. Johnson sat on the bag, attempting to conceal it, according to police.

As officers were placing Johnson in handcuffs, he broke free and ran between two buildings. An officer chased Johnson down two flights of stairs until Johnson lost his balance and fell on the ground.

The following people were arraigned Tuesday on felony charges:

Terry Dwayne Shaw, 37, of Austin, on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and burglary of habitation.

Tommy Cruz, Jr., 30, of Killeen, on a charge of driving while intoxicated with a child passenger. Cruz’s bail was set at $20,000.
