BELTON — A Bell County grand jury Wednesday indicted a Killeen man accused of stabbing a convenience store clerk during a store robbery.

Michael Stuart Burton, 23, was charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony. Burton is believed to have robbed the 7-Eleven store in the 1400 block of East Rancier Avenue early May 22.

A lone female clerk in the store sustained cuts to her hand and abdomen as well as scratches to her face during the attack, according to an arrest affidavit.

She told police a white man wearing a black shirt and black hat with a tattoo near his right eye stabbed her with a knife and kicked her several times. He stole several cartons of cigarettes and fled the store on foot.

Police recovered a knife blade covered in blood at the scene. First Assistant District Attorney Murff Bledsoe said the blade may have broken off the knife’s handle during the alleged attack.

Later that day, Killeen police released footage of the robbery to media outlets and posted it on the department’s Facebook page.

Burton went to a man’s home who had viewed the surveillance footage. The man noticed Burton was wearing the same clothes as the individual depicted in the video, the affidavit stated.

The man called police. When officers arrived at the residence, Burton ran out the back of the home. Police apprehended him near the home.

The clerk was later shown a photo lineup of possible suspects. She picked out Burton as the man who stabbed her and robbed the 7-Eleven, the affidavit stated.
