An exchange of gunfire led to a man being airlifted to a local hospital Tuesday evening with a gunshot wound, according to Sgt. Timothy Manges, an investigator with the criminal investigations division.

The shooting occurred in the area of North 8th Street and Dunn Avenue by the Korner Food Store and Christian Worship Center.

The man who was shot fled the scene during the exchange fled the scene in a car but stopped on Hoover Street, where he was found by Killeen police.

He was airlifted by helicopter to Scott and White Hospital in Temple and was in critical condition with life threatening injuries as of 7:10 p.m., according to Manges. Police got the call at 5:23 p.m.

The second party in the shooting ran south on 8th Street away from the scene, police say.

There were two separate crime scenes blocked off with crime scene tape, one by Hoover Street and another blocking off the area in between Dunn and Dean avenues.

It's unknown if there is more than one victim at this time, Manges said.
