Harker Heights police charged a man with a felony in connection with the alleged theft of more than $9,000 in electricity.

Dennis Duane Roberts, 60, was charged with criminal mischief (diversion of a public service).

A representative from Oncor contacted Harker Heights police and met with an officer on Wednesday regarding a home that was drawing electrical power, but had shown up as inactive in Oncor’s records since 2011, an arrest affidavit stated.

The home, located in the 200 block of East Cherokee, is Roberts’ residence.

At the home, police found an electrical meter box that had been pulled apart with jumper cables attached to it.

Part of a wooden door had been placed on the box in an attempt to conceal it, the affidavit stated.

Roberts later confessed to illegally using electricity since November 2011, police said. The Oncor representative said the total amount of stolen power was valued at $9,333.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke arraigned Roberts on Thursday, setting his bail at $20,000.

Roberts remained in jail Thursday night.
