COPPERAS COVE — A 25-year-old man is in Coryell County Jail after being accused of sexually assaulting and threatening a 7-year-old girl.

Steven Dewayne Hayes was arraigned Sunday by Justice of the Peace John Guinn on a charge of sexual assault of a child.

According to an arrest affidavit, the victim gave a note to a substitute teacher in school accusing Hayes of sexually abusing her.

The note was reported to Child Protective Services and forwarded to the Copperas Cove Police Department.

In an interview with Children’s Advocacy Center in Belton, the girl said the abuse started when she was 6 years old and Hayes told her he would “hurt her with his gun” if she told anyone, the arrest affidavit stated.

Hayes’ bail was set at $50,000.
