Killeen police arrested a 47-year-old man they say stabbed a person in order to collect a $20 debt.
Kenneth Blaine Umstattd was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with an alleged assault that took place near the Motel 7 in the 700 block of East Veterans Memorial Boulevard on Saturday.
Employees summoned police to the scene. The alleged victim had run inside the motel with a wound on his face and asked for police to be called, an arrest affidavit stated.
When an officer arrived, the victim yelled that a man, later identified as Umstattd, had a knife.
Umstattd dropped a small knife and lay on the ground face down. The officer handcuffed Umstattd and began to question him.
Umstattd told the officer the victim owed him money. When he confronted the victim, a fight ensued. Umstattd said he only held out the knife in self-defense and the victim’s injury resulted from him charging Umstattd and running into the blade, the affidavit stated.
The victim told police he had never met Umstattd. He said he was walking by the Liberty 6 Motel when Umstattd approached him and demanded $20.
Umstattd swung at the victim, who later realized he had been cut on his face.
Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin arraigned Umstattd on Tuesday and set his bail at $100,000.
Also arraigned were the following:
Frankie Angel Saldivar, 18, on a charge of harassment of a public servant. Saldivar’s bail was set at $100,000.
