HARKER HEIGHTS — A man wanted in connection to the death of an 18-year-old woman on July 10 surrendered to Harker Heights police on Thursday, according to a news release from Harker Heights Police Department Sgt. Steve Miller.
Matthew Stoddard, 22, of Copperas Cove, was charged with the murder of his girlfriend Angelica Santiago. When police first arrived at the apartment that Santiago and Stoddard lived in together, “early assertions” were that the gunshot wound that Santiago died from was self-inflicted, according to the release.
Stoddard told police that he was in the bathroom with Santiago when she grabbed a gun and shot herself, according to the affidavit. Further investigation done by the Bell County District Attorney’s office led officials to believe that a murder occurred, according to the news release.
The autopsy report showed Santiago suffered two gunshot wounds, and the death was ruled a homicide.
Stoddard was held on $1 million bond by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke. He is currently being transferred to the Bell County Jail.
Santiago was a 2015 graduate of Shoemaker High School. Stoddard was a 2013 graduate of Copperas Cove High School.
