A Copperas Cove man was arrested Friday and charged with theft of an elderly individual after a Lampasas police investigation indicated he stole about $90,988 from his step-grandmother’s bank account.

Brandon Scott Smith, 41, turned himself in to the Lampasas Police Department on Friday. He was arrested on a warrant for theft of $20,000 to $100,000 from an elderly individual, a second-degree felony, according to police.

The alleged theft began in April 2011 and continued over the next few months, Lt. Jody Cummings said.

Police began investigating the case in January when the victim, Gwan Delores Bell, 80, a Kempner-area resident, reported that funds were taken from her bank account almost two years earlier.

She suspected her stepson, Smith, was responsible, police said.

“It wasn’t discovered by the victim for a long time … they had a good relationship at the time and she was unaware this was happening,” Cummings said. “She discovered it over a year later and then it took her a while to turn it in to police for various reasons. Since it was family, she debated with herself over it.”

The police investigation indicated Smith acquired the funds from Bell’s bank account by using the Internet to debit or transfer money from her account to his. Smith had no prior arrests, Cummings said.

Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Andy Garcia arraigned Smith and set bond at $5,000. Smith made bond and was released on Friday.

A second-degree felony carries a punishment of two to 20 years in prison.
