Police arrested a 33-year-old Harker Heights man charged with strangling a student at a Killeen Independent School District high school.

Kendrick Matthew Gittens was charged with assault by strangulation for an alleged incident in which he slapped and choked a student known to him at Gateway High School on April 22.

Gittens was arraigned Wednesday and is being held at Bell County Jail with bail set at $100,000.

Gittens went to the school for a meeting with an administrator. When the meeting concluded, the administrator saw Gittens strike the girl multiple times in the face. Gittens then grabbed her around the neck, lifted her in the air and slammed her on a table, an arrest affidavit stated.

The administrator intervened while Gittens continued to slam the student on the table and hold her around her neck.

When Killeen ISD police arrived, the officer saw the victim screaming and crying in the same room where the adminstrator was restraining Gittens. Gittens continued to try to attack the girl when he was detained.
