A man found dead near downtown Killeen has been identified by Killeen police as 19-year-old Justin Lewis.

Lewis was found dead by police in an empty lot in the 700 block of West Avenue C around 11:20 Monday night. Police were sent to the area in reference to a shots-fired call. Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced Lewis dead at 12:34 a.m.

An initial autopsy report from the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science at Dallas, obtained by the Herald, didn’t provide any further details. It states that the cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the manner of death was a homicide.

Lewis’ death is being investigated as the ninth homicide this year in Killeen. He is the fifth victim under the age of 23 this year.

The last incident being investigated as a homicide was the March 24 death of 13-year-old Joseph Colon in a home on Green Avenue.
