LAMPASAS — A Lampasas County jury found Jason Lee Martel not guilty in the January 2013 death of a 43-year-old Copperas Cove man.
The jury returned the verdict Thursday evening, finding Martel not guilty of one count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of deadly conduct.
Martel was one of four men charged with the murder of 43-year-old Curtis Lee Shed Jr.
Shed’s body was discovered by Lampasas County sheriff’s investigators after Copperas Cove police advised the sheriff’s office about 1 a.m. Jan. 27, 2013, that a caller had reported a dead man in a vehicle at Town Oaks RV Village on U.S. Highway 190.
The caller also told police the victim was shot on County Road 3300 in Lampasas County, where an altercation took place. Upon locating the vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu, sheriff’s investigators found Shed dead in the back seat.
Three other men — Donnley Frank Richey, Bobby Ray Stratton and Frank Muns — also were charged with Shed’s murder. Muns pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Richey and Stratton remain in custody, and their trials are still pending.
