The man believed to have killed himself in Killeen shortly after turning a gun on his wife Monday had past marital problems and an incident of domestic violence.

Police on Wednesday identified the man they found dead Monday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound as 65-year-old Matthews Fredrick Brooks Jr. Before killing himself, Brooks shot his wife, who remained hospitalized at Scott & White Hospital in critical condition Wednesday night.

Brooks’ wife called police Monday, telling an emergency dispatcher Brooks had shot her during a domestic dispute. While police were en route to their house in the 2800 block of Lavender Drive, Brooks shot himself.

A records search showed police had been called to Brooks’ house five months earlier for another domestic disturbance. The July 29 incident led Killeen police to file misdemeanor charges of assault family violence and interference with an emergency call against Brooks.

Brooks spent two days in jail before posting bail.

An arrest affidavit for Monday’s incident stated Brooks and his wife recently separated after 19 years of marriage, though a records search showed divorce filings in Bell County for the couple.

They had been separated for two weeks when his wife came over to the house. Brooks asked her to move back in, and she refused.

It led to a verbal argument that turned physical. At one point, Brooks jumped on the woman’s back and threw her to the floor, the affidavit stated.

The woman told police Brooks grabbed her by the face and asked her for a kiss. She refused, and Brooks bit her lip, it stated.

His wife then attempted to call 911 with her cellphone, but Brooks slapped the phone out of her hand. She then tried to use the house phone, but Brooks grabbed it.

She managed to call 911 after retrieving her cellphone and running outside of the house. Police found her in her parked car one block from the home.

The July charges never reached any disposition, though records showed Brooks was scheduled to enter pleadings to them later this month.

Property records showed Brooks, a New Orleans, La., native, bought the Lavender Drive home in 2006.
